Maddie has decided lately that she is lonely at night and always wants someone to lay with her at bedtime. One night, when both of her parents were too exhausted to go back upstairs one more time, we encouraged her to get in bed with her brother. So now, this is what she does
almost every night. Ironically, they both seem to fall asleep faster while sharing one bed. It is such a blessing to see these two as each other's best friends every day. They fight hard and they play hard, but at the end of the day, this is where they want to be the most...Sunday, March 4, 2012

a random photo shoot...
Yesterday Kaden and Maddie happened to dress alike, so I decided to try to get a few cute pictures. The thought did cross my mind that I might dress Allie up and try to have them hold her for some pictures, but for her own safety, we did not include her in the photo shoot. Here are a few cute shots.
4 Months Old!
Allie's sleep schedule continues to have us a little on our toes...but it is a work in progress. It is sort of a one step forward, two steps back kind of deal. As in, one night I will toy with you and go right to sleep and not eat for hours. Then, the next night when you are just getting ready to put me down and have some time to yourself, I will pretend to go to sleep and then proceed to wake up every fifteen minutes for two hours. Then, when you fall into bed exhausted, I will decide every two hours that I am now hungry! She does this to be mean and spiteful to her parents...mostly her mother who does all the waking up.
Other than this totally unnecessary and selfish behavior, Allie is the most wonderful baby! She is getting the cutest little chubby cheeks and legs. She is so kissable and sweet. Her only complaint in this house might be too much attention sometimes from her siblings. At the moment she is laying across my lap because she had to be rescued from all the jewelry and hair bows that were being put on her. She finally got fed up and started screaming until I rescued her.
We are so thankful to God for our little Vanderploeg caboose. Turns out having baby #3 was not the stupidest thing we have ever done :) We are incredibly blessed.

3 Months Old...
Anyway, back to Allie....She is on her own special little schedule these days. She is pretty tough to get down to bed for the night and often isn't fully asleep until after 11pm. During the night I will feed her a couple times and she goes right back to sleep. Then, if our schedule allows, she will sleep in until 10 or 11 am! Then, she just sort of takes cat naps througout the day (often less than 1 hour) and we do it all again the next night working for a couple of hours to get her to bed. I have never had a child with a schedule like this, and I don't quite know what to do with her. So far we have just sort of been rolling with it and trying to make the best of it. Now that she is such a big girl at three months old, however, we may see if we can impose somewhat of a more normal schedule on this little one.
Other than her strange sleeping habits, she is a wonderfully happy and smiley baby. She gets so excited and starts kicking and smiling whenever Kaden or Maddie comes to talk to her. She also gets very excited about what we call "naked baby kicking hour" around 8 or 9pm. We just strip her down to a diaper and let her go. She kicks like crazy and is so happy for about an hour until we wrap her up in her little baby straight jacket for the night (otherwise known as the miracle blanket). She is also now starting to have "conversations" with us. She loves to have someone talk to her and then make noises in response as if she is involved in a very serious conversation.
These days of baby noises and chubby little legs are bittersweet. They can be exhausting and frustrating, but they are also so sweet and in the big picture they go by way too quickly. So, for today, I will try to slow down, kiss those chubby little legs, enjoy the little noises and appreciate Allie as she sits her next to me having her naked kicking hour.

2 Months Old!
Allie Jane is two months old today. She is growing every day, and is starting to smile at us every day as well. She is a joyful (although sometimes fussy!) addition to our family and we are so blessed to have had her for two months already. She will go to the doctor in a few days and we will see how much she is growing...we will post another update then.

A Special Nativity Scene...
Once again we are so grateful for our very talented Auntie Jenny. This is our very special Nativity scene this year. Mary and Joseph were slightly uncooperative until bribed with ice cream to sit still and admire baby Jesus. You do what you have to do to honor the Lord...that's what my mother always said.
Merry Christmas to all 2 of my faithful blog followers. If you are in Denver for Christmas, these two little angels will actually be playing the part of angels in our church's children's Christmas production. Kaden has his lines fully memorized and I'm sure will expect quite a few treats if he turns in a good performance!
